Does Jungian Analysis / Psychotherapy Work?

Many people in Jungian Analysis have experienced positive results and outcomes in terms of raising awareness, developing better coping strategies, resolving core difficulties, experiencing greater agency in the world, and improved relationships. In response to this question, a study specifically designed to test the question of the effectiveness of Jungian Analysis was conducted in Switzerland. This naturalistic, prospective process-outcome-study was carried out in international cooperation with researchers in Heidelberg, Berlin and Zurich. It was conducted between 1997 and 2003.  The conclusion of this study was: " Jungian psychotherapy is effective in the treatment of patients with a large range of disturbances and different degrees of suffering. The methods, the setting (e.g. frequency) and duration of therapy can be adapted to the needs of the patients and thus are variable.

The average number of hours of treatment is 100 for women  and 74 for men. This translates into about 2 years of work of weekly sessions.

What are your credentials?

I have a Diploma of Analytical Psychology from the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich Switzerland. This degree is equivalent to a Ph.D. in the philosophy of psychology. I have been practicing since 2000. I am a clinical member of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists. OSP is a professional association of psychotherapists. I am also a teaching member of two professional associations of accredited Jungian Analysts - Inter-regional Association of Jungian Analysts and the Association of Graduate Analytical Psychologists.

How Long does it Take?

This is the most frequently asked question. The quick answer is that all depends on the issue that needs to be addressed. If you have been suffering from a particular issue for a very long time, then you can expect that it will take an equivalent amount of time to resolve it.

Some people find that they feel more empowered in a short period of time (e.g. approximately 6 months). There is sufficient research to show that long term psychotherapy is necessary if people are to experience long lasting change in their lives. Others remain in analysis for a number of years while they explore their unconscious life patterns, and the deeper meaning and purpose of their lives.

At some point, analysis can become a spiritual journey as clients touch the deeper archetypal level of reality and meaning, and connect to their deeper inner wisdom and guides. This often happens after several years of analysis. It is important to consider that the amount of time in analysis and the benefits derived from it are directly related to the commitment and the energy that someone is willing to put into to it

If you are looking for lasting and transformative change, then you would be well advised to consider an investment of at least 2 years.

Do I need to remember my dreams to be in a Jungian Analysis?

Dreams do play an important role in examining what is happening in the unconscious. However, it is not necessary to remember your dreams to be in an Jungian Analysis or Jungian based psychotherapy. The unconscious reveals itself in many different ways including fantasies, day dreams, daily stories, creativity, synchronicities, and that narrative your life.

Often people entering into an Jungian based therapy, find that they remember their dreams more easily than they did before.

Can I afford Jungian Analysis?

In dreams, money is often a symbol of energy and of values. It tells us something very important about what is important to us - what we value in ourselves and in others. Money can also be a symbol of energy, personal resources and one's potential. It is indicative of self-worth and power, it is a statement of where our priorities are, reflects our ability to earn the things that we want out of life. So from a symbolic point of view, the money devoted to address psychological issues and well-being is an investment in your life and in realizing your potential. From this perspective, the money that you invest in your own psychological growth and healing is money well spent.

What are your fees?

My fee for a 55 minute analytical or therapy hour is $100 plus 13% HST (July 1, 2010).

What is the difference between a Jungian based psychotherapist and a Jungian Analyst?

The ideas advanced by Jung have become very popular in recent years. Many therapists have undergone their own Jungian analyses and then incorporated their own experiences and learning into their practice of psychotherapy. They often promote themselves as psychotherapists with a Jungian orientation or Jungian psychotherapists.

Only someone who has undergone the rigorous training program in Jungian analysis and holds a Diploma in Analytical Psychology from a recognized Jungian Institute can called themselves a Jungian Analyst. There are many Jungian Institutes in the world, These training institutes are accredited by the International Association for Analytical Psychology and is equivalent to a PhD in the philosophy of psychology.

What codes of ethics do you follow and what about confidentiality?

I am a professional member of several associations including the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists where I was also the Chair of the Ethics Committee. As a clinical member and a member in good standing of OSP, I abide by the Society's code of ethics. To see the Code of Ethics, click here

I am committed to an ongoing professional development program to refine my skills as a Jungian psychoanalyst and therapist.  All analytic and astrological sessions are confidential. There are few exceptions to this which are based in the "Duty to Warn" requirement that all psychotherapists must abide by. For example, this rule is effective if you are threaten to harm yourself or someone else or if a child is in danger.

Are you regulated or licensed?

The Ontario Government enacted the Psychotherapy Act in 2007 which brought into existence New College of Psychotherapy and Mental Health Workers. It is intended that the new college will begin accepting registrants in 2014 or 2105. It is my intention to abide by the scope of practice and be registered with the College.
